ALBUM REVIEW: KENDRICK LAMAR “TO PIMP A BUTTERFLY”

March 17, 2015 |  by  |  ALBUM REVIEW, NEW ALBUM, NEW MUSIC  |  Share

    On Monday 3/16/2015, the world was blessed with a leak from one of the most anticipated album’s of the year. Kendrick Lamar’s team was pissed, somebody at Interscope Records was going to PAY!! However as a popular artist leaks come with the notoriety. Not saying it’s right but it happens. I’m just glad he didn’t scratch anyone like Jay-Z did Lance “Un” Rivera at the kit kat club for bootlegging his album in 1999.

    Ok folks, it you aren’t into spoken-word, funk (youtube Bootsy Collins or George Clinton) and darkness this album may not be for you. Sorry folks NO TRAP or TWERK music. K.DOT has a very unique sound, when I first heard him I swore he was from the island or something. But nope he’s straight from Compton, CA. For all of you who have heard this album one thing we all can agree on is that Kendrick is RAPPING HIS ASS OFF on this project. I can’t lie I had a hard time listening to this album straight through. Read my thoughts to help you determine if you want to drop $14.99 for the album

    The album features 16 tracks and I rocked with 6/16. Now remember, this is from a first listen. It may grow on me after a few more listens.

    Candi Picks:

    Wesley Theory: This is the opening track and I instantly started to nod my head. I would describe it as Hip-hop meets Funk! Kendrick’s voice goes perfect with the beat. This track made me feel like I was in Compton during the summer at a house party having a ball!!

    King Kunta: The spirit of James Brown entered the lyricist while in the booth. This track gave me “The Payback” vibe 2015 K.Dot style. His delivery on the song is crazy!

    Momma: I am so into soulful tracks and this record is just that!! I took it back twice! Kendrick was snapping so hard I had to bring it back like “wait” and then I got chills.

    Hood Politics: There’s something I dig about this track. I especially love the little skit in the beginning. I’m from the era where voice-mails messages were added to albums. It set the tone for the song. It deserved a repeat.

    Alright: The production and his flow paired together created a BANGER!! I like how this track has a message but it didn’t come off preachy. Shout-out to Pharrell on the beat. I can totally see Common on the remix.

    “For Sale? – Interlude” Kendrick get’s his 70’s vibe on with this track. I love his singy rapping flow on this song. He then spits in a very pimpish/ spoken word way. While listening I wanted to smoke some hookah lol. A real chill vibe.

    Overall Kendrick Lamar has every right to feel like he is one of the greats. In this era where real music isn’t respected and new dudes aren’t dropping full SOLID projects. I salute Kendrick and give his album 4/5 for ratings. I wanted to hear a few more radio friendly tracks. However according to Rollingstone Kendrick described this album as;

    “honest, fearful and unapologetic”

    When artist are in that space when it comes to their art, its F radio great music is being made!!

    P.s for all of my 2Pac stans, Pac made the album on the final track. Kendrick set it up as if he were interviewing the rap legend. Pac spoke like the renegade that we all remember. That was dope treat for us that grew up with Tupac.

Please ladies do NOT head to your local braider requesting this style. Being that 1) its a wig and 2) we don't want to see you in a local Walmart, dragging these inches almost tripping while trying to strut....GIRL!! Anyway! “MotorSport” is the lead single off Migos’ upcoming album Culture II, due in January. Check the video out below.
